Crayon Crawler, a web browser for your kids.. - By darkpoet 1:07 pm
1st Net Technologies today announced the official release of the Crayon Crawler beta version 5.2, a "secure" Internet browser designed exclusively for children. The Crayon Crawler runs on Internet Explorer 5.0. The most unique and attractive feature of the Crayon Crawler is the use of Microsoft's "Agent" technology and its state-of-the-art, animated 3-D characters. Other features include a talking chat room, automatic blocking of vulgarity, animated characters that can actually read to, and interact with the children, a "closed" email system that eliminates Spam, pornographic solicitations, links and unwanted emails, as well as instant messaging that allows children to know if their community friends are on-line. This is probably a good idea for your younger children that you don't want to see certain questionable materials, but once they have a way to leave the house, they will look at what they want, so it's a moot point later on. Check it out here.

Teleportation... can it be done? - By darkpoet 12:59 pm
Physicists can already teleport tiny things, such as a beam of light or the angular spin of atomic nuclei, butthey say that the first applications of teleportation will be in quantum computers and quantum cryptography, not human transport. Quantum cryptography is a communications procedure so secure, that any attempt at interception of an encrypted code by an eavesdropper would result in the message's immedidate destruction. Neato. And Los Alamos Labs has a prototype of a quantum computer that is capable of sending information up to a distance of 48 kilometers. Check out the story here at Wired.

he Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Thursday ruled unconstitutional the U.S. government's ban on exporting source code for strong encryption or posting it on the Internet. Poor poor big brother is going to have to work harder to crack the other sides code now, but they can do it, I mean, they are the government. Click here for the big picture.

The world's first Android - By xix 2:07 am
A project by the Japanese Government has spawned the world's first humanoid-looking robot(android). It walks, talks, bows, waves, shakes hands and walks up and down stairs. The 286 pound robot dubbed P3 cannot think for itself(the US specializes in AI technology more), but the P3 will be remote controlled possibly through a fiber-optic network. The project is slated to be complete in 2002. 'It's wierd' - quote from a Honda representative. You can say that again!

Parents don't like you on the net? - By xix 1:54 am
Show them the recent Web of Doom article on Salon. This pretty much explains in a nutshell how paranoid the American public is about the Internet, and how your parents should thank the web not blame it. Good read.

Build your own Arcade at home - By xix 1:49 am
I was at a computer trade show yesterday looking for new goodies when I noticed a guy selling old empty arcade upright cabinets. I thought wow that would be cool to have in the living room(G). Suffice to say I didn't buy one(they were only 99 bucks doh), but I was curious just how hard it would be to throw my computer in there as a game machine. Steps in Arcade@Home. Tons of information on different custom cabinet game machine's. Next time I see on of those cabinets I might just buy it afterall.

Windows98 SE? How about Viagra SE? - By darkpoet 12:34 am
Viagra Second Edition, you ask? Well, not exactly. But a new drug similar to Viagra called Uprima, is being tested as we speak and could be available towards the middle or end of the year. This drug is a little different in that it helps send eletrical impulses from the hypothalamus in the brain down the spinal cord to increase blood flow. Viagra works by increasing nitric oxide in the body to get more blood flowing. Why is this important? All geeks gotta have loving... Get the full story here.

Satellite or cable? - By darkpoet 12:28 am
In a $3.6 billion joint venture between Lockheed Martin, TRW, and Telecom Italia, plans are being made to offer internet access through a network of four satellites. The company is called Astrolink, and is headed by the former VP of DirecTV. It will require you to purchase a 2ft satellite dish, but will offer both upstream and downstream access, unlike the servcie DirecPC which only has downstream access through their dish. The service will be availabe in about three years, so I guess it's DSL or cable for a while longer. Get the full story here at Wired.
